Episode 2: Building with Grace Though You're Not Perfect with Valerie Elliot Shepard

Updated: Mar 31, 2020

You are loved with an everlasting love. That's what the Bible says. And underneath are the everlasting arms.

In this episode of the Every Wise Woman Builds podcast, listen in as the little girl who heard Elisabeth Elliot's comforting voice over her cradle shares how she's learned to follow the faith of her parents throughout her life.

Included in this interview with Valerie Elliot Shepard, pastor's wife, mother of eight, and daughter of missionaries Jim & Elisabeth Elliot:

"It was when I understood I had to die to my reputation. My accomplishments, and how I looked as a mother, was not what it's about.

"It's about Christ, not my accomplishments. I had seven children when I thought I was a failure as a mother. Why did Christ die for me? What does it mean for my life today? Does Jesus make a difference, as my mother used to say? He should. It's not me that's an amazing person."

"Christ died for me as a failure, and I needed the gospel every day."

"It's because Christ is my righteousness that I'm able to do anything good. I used to think I ought to be amazing because I'm the daughter of Jim and Elisabeth Elliot! It came to me that that couldn't make me a holy person. Holiness comes from a walk with Christ."

"I was determined that I was trying to make my husband who I thought he ought to be without realizing I was doing it. We women want to tell our husbands what they ought to do, but the Lord has given them a good brain to tell them what to do. Our job is to honor them, laugh with them, because without that, life is pretty grim."
